The winter cold has arrived, but so has the winter fun. Last week, the ice-skating pond at St Arnaud was frozen enough for locals to dust off their skates and this weekend Rainbow Ski Area will open for the winter. The ice skating pond, located two minutes down the road from St Arnaud Village, has already proven popular with both professional ice skaters and families. Hamish Simpson, operator of the Rotoiti Water Taxi, has been hiring out skates for the first time, after purchasing the business earlier this year to keep him busy in the off-season. He says he has to check the pond each morning by making sure his foot won’t go through
the ice if he stomps on it. “It can be a little bit fickle with the pond. Sometimes it’s skateable, sometimes it’s not. You’ve got to be onto it and check it every day,” he says. Rainbow marketing and events coordinator, Georgie Tudor-Jones, says the ski field is looking in fantastic shape for opening day, this Saturday. “We extended our snow making to the top, last year it was only up to tower six. Even if we don’t have enough natural snow we’re going to have man-made snow right from the top from day one,” she says. To see a video on this story, visit

No cellphone funding for Nelson It appears there will be no immediate improvement to Nelson’s cellphone coverage, after Nelson City Council decided not to apply for a share of $50 million that the government has made available for upgrades of mobile phone “black spots”. Nelson City Council confirmed that it has no intention of applying for the money, despite Tasman District Council surveying its residents and enlisting the support of the Nelson Economic Development Agen-
cy to support its case for some funding. Residents from around the region were quick to point out areas where cellphone coverage is poor in Nelson, via the Nelson Weekly Facebook page. Many said there were black spots in Marsden Valley, Maitai Valley, parts of Atawhai, Cable Bay, Ngawhatu, Todd Bush Valley, Marybank and even parts of Nelson South, including the hospital. But the council says it does not “have any-

A year ago, Nelson air travellers were screaming out for some competition as Air New Zealand drove up prices and offered little in return. It appears there were plenty of people listening. In the past week, Jetstar has visited Nelson, Originair has launched and Kiwi Regional Airlines has announced the routes it will service, with Nelson as its base.

Nelson Airport CEO Rob Evans says it’s an exciting, but hectic, time for the airport. “It’s been an interesting few weeks for aviation in Nelson. It doesn’t often happen quite like that,” he says. “These decisions aren’t made by them overnight, a lot of planning has gone into it so it is purely coincidental, but it does show and demonstrate the strength of the market here.” The airport is in the early stages of planning an expansion of the terminal and Rob says, while these announcements won’t alter the plans, it is good timing. “It’s perfect timing really. Jetstar CEO Grant Kerr lives in Richmond with his family and, after time as CEO of Air Nelson, knows exactly what the region will offer to Jetstar. But he says he won’t let local loyalties sway his decision about which centres to fly to. “We can’t have an airline just for me to fly to work. Is it commercially viable? That’s the question, but I don’t see anything negative

And that’s just what around 80 Nelson car enthusiasts will be doing this Saturday when they join the Nelson Rod and Custom Club’s Independence Day Cruise. This year’s cruise will be heading from the Suburban Club in Nelson to Riwaka and back, a distance of about 100km
which will equate to around $50 of gas, plus the $5 entry fee. But that isn’t a concern for longtime American car enthusiast Barry Hefford, who will be driving his 1938 Ford Deluxe Sedan hot rod in Saturday’s cruise. “It’s all about enhancing performance and looks. I really like the pre-1949 look with big mudguards, running boards and a narrow bonnet.” The cruise is for all American vehicles. It will leave the Suburban Club at 11am, with drivers meeting from 9.30am.

Kindy’s new hours ‘family-friendly’

Kindergartens are changing their operating hours to fit in with the school day, in a bid to make their hours more “family-friendly” amid competition from private preschools. CEO of the Nelson Tasman Kindergarten Association, Trish Casey, says the change is in response to a demand for longer hours, and to stop the migration to private centres. “Some people just can’t make kindergarten work with the current hours that we offer, especially in families where both parents are working,” she says. The association already has several kindergartens offering the longer sessions, and the new model will mean that all 19 kindergartens across the region will follow the same structure from the beginning of term three. A parent survey from last year showed that most parents were happy with the current hours, but another segment said they would happily take up full days. “What we figured was that what we’re changing to doesn’t affect the families who are happy with the shorter hours, because they can continue to have that, but we can now also address the needs of those who wanted something more, and attract new families,” says Trish. The new hours will mean big changes for teaching staff, who have been involved in a consultation phase. “We’ve taken on-board feedback and we’ve tried to make it work as well as it

Donna Bishop, head teacher of Victory Square Kindergarten, says that there are both positive and negative outcomes for her kindergarten. “We will lose professional time and it will definitely be more challenging, however we are trying to be innovative and will do our best to ensure that families do not notice any change in our quality of output,” she says. “But, in light of the challenging financial time our association is under, they are doing their best to increase participation across our kindergarten sector, and trying to provide the most economical way to move forward.”
The new hours are being well received at Victory, with most parents choosing to extend their children’s sessions. Steve Mortimer, whose daughter attends the kindergarten, is supportive of the change. “Personally, I think it’s a good idea. It’s extra time for me,” he says. However, some parents will be sticking to the old hours, such as Andrea Goodwin, who says she thinks it’s important for her daughter to have some afternoons at home. The association says it will still support teacher aides and administrators, and stand by their commitment to provide 100 per cent registered teachers.

Rocks Rd cycle trail gets $3M A very cold Nick Smith was quick to swap the red helmets provided for a pair of blue ones, as he rode along the Maitai Walkway this morning on a tandem bike with councillor Eric Davy. The ride was in celebration of an announcement made yesterday that $3 million in funding will be provided to Nelson as part of the Government’s Urban Cycleways programme, in order to upgrade the Nelson Coastal Route. The bridge over saltwater creek, between the end of the Maitai Walkway and QEII Dr, is the first to receive work as part of the council’s list of planned upgrades. Chair of the regional transport committee, councillor
Eric Davey, says work on replacing the bridge will begin almost immediately. “At the moment it’s not suitable for a shared cycleway. Initially, the council couldn’t afford to replace the bridge,” he says. He says the council is committed to finishing what it starts and will complete the upgrade to the Nelson Coastal Route in sequential stages, starting at the bridge. The existing bridge will be relocated, with undisclosed plans already being put in place by council. MP Nick Smith says the upgrades will allow walkers and cyclists to travel to Tasman over a flat land path. “Flat land attracts more commuter cyclists so this is

cated as part of the $100 million national Urban Cycleways Fund announced during the election last year. Transport Agency Central Regional Director Raewyn Bleakley says the improvements will provide better connected facilities. “Nelson is quite simply one of the best places in the country to get around on bike or on foot, and we’ve seen the community continue to flock to cycling as a popular way to travel. Together with Nelson City Council, we have an opportunity to provide a cycle and pedestrian facility along the waterfront and through to Tahunanui, that will be a real asset to the city."

Light Nelson wins community award Andrew Board Light Nelson hasn’t brightened Queen’s Gardens this winter, but the trust behind the event certainly lit up the Trustpower Community Awards last night, winning the supreme award. It’s been a great week for the Light Nelson Trust. The win comes on the back of Nelson City Council signing off on granting the trust $150,000 to host the popular event in Queen’s Gardens every second winter. The awards were held last night at Seifrieds Winery in front of almost 200 spectators, the majority of whom are also volunteers. Representatives of the Light Nelson Trust received, on behalf of the dozens of other volunteers involved, a framed certificate, a trophy and $1500 in prize money. They also will have the opportunity to represent the district at the 2015 Trustpower National Community Awards, being held in Dunedin next March.

Rate increase of 2.7% for Nelson
An average rate rise of 2.7 per cent, a new community facility in Stoke and a $30 million storm water upgrade, are the major talking points of the Nelson City Council’s long term plan, which will come into force this Wednesday. The plan, which set out the projects and services to be delivered over the next ten years, was passed by the city’s councillors and mayor last week. General rates are forecast to increase by an average of 2.7 per cent over the 10 year period of the Long Term Plan. The plan outlines significant investment in core infrastructure, including an

Rate increases announced: Nelson City Councillors decided to approve in the ten year plan every luxury, nonessential spending item on the agenda. Nelson ratepayers are in for a huge rate rise over the next ten years. It is disappointing that our councillors have learned nothing from Greece, and have displayed their lack of financial management skills. Their view is that ratepayers can fund any project or wish list, no matter how frivolous. Next election, we need some candidates who know something about finance, and who understand the financial situation of ordinary people. Dan McGuire. Both Tasman District and Nelson City councils have adopted their ten year plans and seem excited to announce a rate increase of only 2.6 per cent or 2.7 per cent. Do these decision makers take no regard to the economy and peoples personal circumstances. A compounded rate increase of 2.7 per cent amounts to an increase of over 30 per cent, not including the increase that will also be added by three revaluations undertaken by the Government. Simply put, the local councils seem to believe that the ratepayers are an open cheque book and that we will all easily roll over and take it. For Tim and Hayley Hodges, listening to vinyl is more than just about the music – it's about the experience. The avid record collectors are just two of many Nelsonians who are rediscovering the magic of vinyl, and say that even in the digital age of MP3s and Spotify, there will always be something magical about putting on a record. Tim and Hayley started collecting vinyl a few years ago when Hayley got Tim a recordplayer for his birthday. “I've always really liked the sound of them - that crackle that you get,” says Tim. “You can see it, you can feel it. It's a tangible experience,” adds Hayley. The couple go record hunting in second hand shops and have had a few 'really good finds,' and if they are after a particular album, they buy it online. They've even got their two young children hooked; who take turns every night choosing a record to put on before bed. “Our kids love them,” says Tim. “Especially when I change the speed to make them sound funny.” Tim Babbage, owner of Beggs Music Works in Nelson, says he's seeing multiple turntables walk out the door each week, compared with five years go, where they would only sell one every couple of months. “It's quite surprising in a way. We’ve always sold record players, but it’s certainly bigger now than it was five years ago. Much bigger” says Tim. “Some of its nostalgia, but it's just fashionable again now. Barriers installed to stop out-of-control cars
Users of the cycle path next to Whakatu Drive will have extra protection from next month when a $200,000 wire-rope barrier is finished. The 2.5km wire rope edge barrier, now under construction, is designed to protect people using the shared pathway from errant vehicles. NZTA’s Mark Owen says Whakatu Drive is one of the busiest roads in Nelson with a daily vehicle count of 21,000, and a new barrier will put proven lifesaving technol-
ogy between walkers and cyclists and the thousands of cars that pass them every day. “We already know that the median barrier we’ve installed down the centreline is very effective, especially as it has been hit on a number of occasions. Every time it’s struck, we know that’s potentially a nasty crash that has been prevented. “We also want to keep people enjoying the waterfront safe from vehicles that could possibly lose control, and a barrier along the edge of the road will give people peace

Nelson's newest companies launched at Startup weekend Jacob Chandler A mentor at Nelson’s Startup Weekend “ate humble pie” when he watched team Bleeep deliver their presentation, a web browser plugin designed to censor online films and make them more family friendly. Team Bleeep were told “yeah nah, it’s not going to happen" when they initially pitched their idea in front of around 100 entrepreneurs, designers and developers from around the region. Rebekah Siame, a marketing member of Bleeep, says they got quite a reaction when the team managed to create a working web browser plugin with only
six hours of coding on Sunday morning. “It’s about putting the power back in the parent’s hands. It’s designed to work on any platform from Netflix to YouTube." Bleeep was one of the two teams that took out top prize at the Nelson Startup Weekend, the other being Team Keen which has designed a new way for employers to connect with job seekers. The teams will share the top prize, including six months of co-working space at the Bridge Street Collective, accounting and business advice, and a place on the forthcoming Co.Starters programme. If you sign up for a group lesson, you will be assessed for current ability and then assigned to an instructor with other skiers/riders of similar ability for your lesson. Private lessons offer the opportunity for either one-on-one coaching, or a group lesson with just your family or friends, and coaching specific to your individual needs. This year’s season has kicked off to a great start with the support and efforts of the numerous sponsors, who have been involved with getting things up and running for the year, and have helped improve the ski fields and facilities. The Nelson Tasman Hospice is replacing their old mattresses with nine new high-tech ones, after fundraising over $61,000 during the past year. Hospice CEO Frans Dellebeke says the new $7000 air pumpcontrolled beds will replace the older "Lilo-style” beds and help to reduce bed sores in patients. “We thought that if patients come in, especially at the end of life, then they need to be as comfortable as possible,” he says. “These are mattresses that fluctuate. Pressure sores come as a result from lying still in one area, by having the air pumped around the bed the pressure varies all the time. There’s an electronic gadget which regulates how much movement you want to have on the mattress." Frans says some of the older mattresses were beginning to break down, but the ones that were still in a usable condition would be put to good use. “Since we got new mattresses, the old ones that are still going can be sent out and used in the community."

He says the hospice caters to 140 patients in the Nelson Tasman region, although the hospice building itself only holds a small number of patients. “There’s this belief that patients come to the hospice to die and that’s not the case at all, they tend to come to us for symptom control and management and then they go. A patient may come into a hospice three or four times during a hospice period." Funding for the new beds came
from a mixture of grants and donations from organisations such as Rotary and Lions clubs. “We have organisations like the Masonic Lodge and the horticultural society, who came to me with money to spare. They were over the moon when they heard what we are going to use the money for,” Frans says. The hospice is looking towards their long term goals of raising funds for a new $16,000 barometric bed and employing a palliative care specialist.

Despite mounting speculation that star Nelson rugby player James Lowe would debut for the All Blacks next week, the player himself says it won't happen – yet. The Tasman Makos and Chiefs winger had another outstanding season in Super 15, and with 17 All Blacks unavailable for the historic test against Samoa in Apia due to Super 15 commitments, there was talk that James would be included for his first test match. Several national media outlets reported that James could make his debut, with several leading commentators selecting him on the bench in their "probable" teams. But James quashed those rumours this week, saying he is booked in for shoulder surgery and is unlikely to be con-
sidered. James needs the operation after injuring a shoulder ligament in a tackle against the Crusaders and he expects to have the surgery within the next few weeks. "I pretty much ruled myself out of All Blacks contention," James says. "You can't play at that level unless you are 100 per cent. "I couldn't lift my arm for a week after it was injured and then went through the rehab, but it still needs surgery. It was bad timing because I was starting to play some good rugby and then I just couldn't quite get back on the horse when I came back." However, James says he had a discussion with All Blacks coach Ian Foster last week and talked about "the things I need to work on".
"It's just the little things. Hopefully, I'll get them sorted and you never know." The sore shoulder didn't stop the flying winger from turning out for his beloved Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys on Saturday, though. James spent the morning at the club, signing autographs and talking with the club's youngest players before playing for Waimea as they beat Stoke 67-12 at Jubilee Park. The win keeps Waimea on top of the Car Company division one table. The competition's other top team, Taylor's Contracting Wanderers, also had a big win over Kahurangi, 47-12 in Motueka, while Wakatu Hotel Marist secured its spot in the top four with a 27-13 win over Galbraith Nelson in Tahunanui.

New Zealand's tallest sporting export is on his way to Nelson to teach the next generation of basketballers. NBA sensation Steven Adams, of the Oklahoma City Thunder, was officially confirmed to head a basketball camp for players aged 7 to 18, in August. “Nelson Basketball Association are delighted to be bringing a basketball camp of this calibre to the region”, says Nelson Basketball Association general manager Andrea Cockburn. The two-day camp will be held at Saxton Stadium on August 27 and 28. Adams, the younger brother of double-Olympic shot put champion Valerie, has completed two seasons in the world's best basketball league, the NBA.
Although young, Adams has clocked up plenty of court-time in the Thunder team, which also includes superstars Kevin Durrant and Russell Westbrook. Andrea says she's been working with Tony Shallcrass and Adams’ mentor Kenny McFadden. "McFadden has expressed the desire Steven has to increase the profile of New Zealand basketball internationally, in addition to contributing to the calibre of basketball throughout the community and country," says Nelson Basketball Board chairman Gary Reilly.
